Math 1050 - Credit Card Debt Assignment

This was a perfect assignment for an example of real world situations people tend to get themselves into, which as you can see by the title is, credit card debt. However, many people are unaware of the debt they accrue on top of their original debt because they only pay attention to what their Bill tells them to pay, which is the minimum due, and as some of us know paying the minimum due is not the answer to getting out of the debt we put ourselves into. As someone who uses a credit card and as an American (living in Germany) I've noticed a huge difference between Americans and Europeans spending habits. In Berlin most places don't even take credit cards, and to own one you need to pay a monthly fee to the credit card company, even if you don't use it. People hear tend to only spend what they have and save for what they want down the road. Our society is made up of consumers. We buy what we want when we want it, even if we don't have the money, we have the attitude that we will find a way to pay for it later, and if we don't we just continue to go further down that rabbit hole called debt. The first step to changing these bad habits is by educating people on the subject. This assignment was a great way to do that. It introduced the students in the class to formulas they can use for years to come to figure out their, or others finances. i.e., how much they'd have to pay every month to have their debt w/the interest paid off in days, months or years. It was an eye opener to me, and forced me to think about the debt I have been accruing and just how long it is going to take me to pay it off, and just how much of that will be the interest. Many of us don't want to think about it, and that will only get us and our society into further debt. Ignoring a problem will not make it go away. Education is the key. Forcing ourselves to face the facts and the truth will not only help us go further in our own lives but will help those around us as well.
